Meta AI Chatbot Hits 400M Monthly Users Amidst Competition

On Wednesday, Meta's chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said that 400 million people use the AI chatbot Llama every month and 185 million people use it every week. This he has said when competition in AI is seriously frDecht with other strong players like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

In a post on Threads, Mr Zuckerberg said the growth of Llama had been faster than expected. He added that the chatbot has seen nearly 350 million downloads since it launched, of which 20 million have come in the last month alone. Usage, meanwhile, is up tenfold since the beginning of 2024. For comparison, three billion users are now on board with Meta AI tools, and these haven't even launched into key markets such as the UK, Brazil, or the EU.

While Llama is free, ChatGPT and Gemini are either proprietary or licensed to enterprises through the cloud. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in his presentation, claimed the monthly users of ChatGPT are 200 million, while API usage was ten times larger since July after releasing its more economical ChatGPT-40 mini model. He also claims that 92% of Fortune 500 companies make use of OpenAI products.

On a larger scale, OpenAI and Anthropic work with the U.S. government in developing Decarate research and tests for building AI safety features. With AI development growing incredibly, the top companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Google are working neck and neck, pushing the progress so that users around the world can share in AI.
